Doll Measurements

Note. Knitted clothing always has a little extra "give," so your measurements don't need to be highly precise. In addition, all the clothing projects are designed to allow for ease of fit over rigid plastic figures.

For the advanced knitting projects, you'll get special instructions on how to measure, gauge, and knit a good close fit.
For beginning and intermediate projects, if your measurements are within ½" or so on small dolls or within 1" or so on large dolls, you'll be fine. In fact for most things, unless you're not fussy about a perfect fit, you don't even need to be this precise!

Tip: Your Beginner's Tool Kit comes with a tape measure. Even if you don't have a tape measure, you can still measure your doll. Use a piece of thread or string to measure your doll, then compare the length of the string to a flat ruler.
Height

If possible, stand your doll up on a table or other flat surface. If not, lay it down.
Hold the tape measure (or string) in your left hand, between your thumb and your index finger, letting the short end hang freely below.
Hold it near your doll's forehead, and with your right hand, gently tug the tape measure or string downward until it reaches the table.
Grasp the bottom edge of the tape measure or string with your right hand, keeping it exactly even with the table.
Now, gradually pull your left hand up the tape measure or string until the bottom of your thumb is even with the top of your doll's head.
The number on the tape measure is your doll's height.

Wrap the tape measure around your doll's head, at about the level of the ears. Read the measurement at the place where the tip of the tape measure (or the "0" mark) meets a number on the rest of the tape measure.

Lift up your doll's arms, and wrap the tape measure (or string) all the way around your doll's chest, just beneath her (or his!) arms. Read the measurement at the place where the tip of the tape measure (or the "0" mark) meets a number on the rest of the tape measure.

Wrap the tape measure around the middle of your doll's body. If your doll has a belly button, measure just a little above that. If your doll is a fashion doll, the waist will be the narrowest part of your doll's torso. Read the measurement at the place where the tip of the tape measure (or the "0" mark) meets a number on the rest of the tape measure.

Wrap the tape measure around your doll's body a little below the waist and above your doll's legs. For most dolls, the hips will be the widest part of your doll's torso. Read the measurement at the place where the tip of the tape measure (or the "0" mark) meets a number on the rest of the tape measure.
